Trick #9: Create Web Page Shortcuts with Navigator 4.0x

Several of our clients have asked for shortcuts to web pages to appear on the Desktop, in the Launcher, or in the Apple Menu. This is a relatively easy task with the older versions of Netscape, however, if you use the User Profile solution from Trick #8 for Netscape 4.x, you will have to follow these instructions to conquer to task.

Step #1: Create a new profile on a prototype machine using the Netscape User Profile Manager. Name the new Profile after the page that you want to shortcut to. This will save the new profile in a folder with the same name in the Netscape preferences folder.

Step #2: Set the default homepage of this new profile to the URL of the page you wish to shortcut to.

Step #3: Close Netscape and create an alias to the "Netscape Preferences" file stored in the folder named after your new profile under System Folder:Netscape Users:

Step #4: Move this alias to wherever you wish for the shortcut to reside.

Step #5: Rename the alias so that it can be identified as a shortcut to the desired URL

Step #6: Change the icon of the alias to a Netscape icon. This alias is your new shortcut.

Step #7: When a user double-clicks on this shortcut, Netscape will launch and open the shortcut page.

Step #8: To ensure that all of the profiles on your client machines will have the same bookmarks available, copy the "bookmarks.html" file from the folder containing your default Netscape profile to the folders of your other (shortcut) profiles.
