If a 6500 running Mac OS8 shows a disk with a blinking question mark at start-up, follow this procedure. This problem is caused by leaving virtual memory on at shut down while using an older version of the hard drive disk driver. This proceedure should be followed every time that the system software is re-installed on a 6500.
Step #1: Reload the system software. (Sorry)
Step #2: Copy the folder named "Drive-Setup Update for 6500-OS8" from the "miscellaneous" folder on the CLC4 volume.
Step #3: Open "Drive Setup".
Step #4: Select the hard-drive name from the list of drives.
Step #5: Open the "Functions" pull-down menu.
Step #6: Select "Update Driver". Drive setup will then update the hard drive disk driver.
Step #7: You will be told that the new driver will be available upon restart. Click "OK".
Step #8: Exit "Drive Setup".
Step #9: Restart the machine.
Step #10: Assimilate the machine using the correct assimilator application. The machine should restart and operate properly. Virtual memory should also function properly.
