About Homer: Historically, the servers in CLC1 have been named after the members of the Brady Bunch (Greg, Marsha, Peter, etc.). Considering the age of this cast of characters and our push for newer, more modern, technology, we've decided that it was time to update our naming scheme. We opted for another model family of Television fame, The Simpsons. Homer is the first of the Simpson line, but hopefully not the last... About the Server: It is the CLC1 Macintosh G3 AppleShare Server's responsibility is to store and serve the Macintosh Assimilator Images for Computer Learning Center 1. The server is quite capable of its task and is capable of expanding to meet the future needs of the lab. Beyond the scope of the current hardware, the system has space for a second internal hard drive, as well as an UltraWide SCSI interface adapter (already installed). This adapter would allow for one or more external SCSI hard drives to added. In addition, the server has a 10/100Mb Ethernet Adapter (also installed) that will be capable of taking advantage of the planned switched Fast Ethernet network. About the Software: MacOS 8.1: The server is running the most current Mac OS that is supported by the server hardware, MacOS 8.1. AppleShare IP 6.0: The file sharing services are provided by AppleShare IP 6.0. Currently, only the File and Web sharing module of Appleshare IP is installed on the machine. All of the features of this module have been disabled except File Share for Appletalk & TCP/IP. The only way to connect to the server through its current configuration is by using the Chooser on a Macintosh. Daemon: Daemon is a freeware NTP server that accepts time requests from client machines that are running an NTP client. Daemon is used to synchronize the clocks of all of the Macintoshes in the the lab to prevent the Assimilator from downloading all files due to a changed Modification Date. Vremya: Vremya is a freeware NTP client. Vremya is being used to synchronize the servers clock with the online "atomic clock" at the US Naval Observatory. This time is, in turn, sent to the clients by way of Vremya on the clients and Daemon on the server. BlackWatch: BlackWatch is a freeware screen saver that allows password protection on the server console. About Disk Storage: Homer currently has a 9GB internal Wide-SCSI hard drive. This hard drive is partitioned into three storage units. "Homer-System" is a 1.5GB partition that stores all of the system and local application files. "CLC1 Assimilator" is a 4GB partition that stores the Assimilator Images for Computer Learning Center 1. "Homer-Shared" is a 3.5GB partition that is currently unused. About Share Points: Homer currently has two share points. This means that only two AppleShare volumes are available on Homer from the Macintosh Chooser. "Assimilator" is the CLC1 Assimilator Volume (located on the CLC1 Assimilator partition). "Shared Volume" is the space available on the Homer-Shared partition. About Users & User Groups: User accounts should only be added to the server if someone requires access to one of the AppleShare Volumes. Homer Currently has two user groups. Members of the "Assimilator" group have read/write access to the Assimilator Volume. Members of the "Shared" group have read/write access to the Shared Volume. Users who require access to either of the AppleShare Volumes should be added to the appropriate group. DO NOT simply give the user read/write permissions to the desired volume. Note: There is one exception to this rule, the "asuser" account. The "asuser" account is given strict read-only access to the Assimilator Volume and no access to the Shared Volume. this account is used by the Assimilator to gain access to the appropriate Assimilator Image during Assimilation. |
