Book Review - The Toolbox Book
Back to the Rolling "M" Workshop

Title: The Toolbox Book
Author: Jim Tolpin
Publisher: Taunton Press
Date: 1998

The Toolbox Book is a historical overview of one of the most overlooked objects in any house, garage, or workshop, the toolbox. Tolpin starts with the earliest most basic wooden chest style tool boxes, ends with today's modern "toolbox on wheels" vehicles, and touches on just about every toolbox and tool cabinet style in between. he includes special segments on how to build several of the toolbox styles discussed in the book. Also included are many full color pictures of some of the most ingenious, well throughout, and beautiful toolboxes ever built. This book is one volume of the Workshop Classics trilogy from Taunton Press. I have yet to read the other two books, The Workshop Book and The Workbench Book (both by Scott Landis), but If they are as good as this one, their definitely worth checking out. The Toolbox Book shows you the how the craftsmen of old built their toolboxes and how modern innovation has helped the humble toolbox keep up with the times. You can't help but be inspired to build a toolbox of your own. But even if you're not looking to build a tool box or cabinet, this book is an interesting read for simply for its historical value. Its amazing to see the craftsmanship that woodworkers of the past put into their toolboxes. This book shows how you too can create a masterpiece of a toolbox.

I picked up my copy at WoodCraft, but you can also find it at any major bookstore.
