Woodworking Project - Smoking Stand (End Table)
Back to the Rolling "M" Workshop Projects Page

The floorspace beneath the folding TV tray next to my La-Z-Boy recliner has become the defacto home for all of the woodworking catalogs that filter into our house. Needless to say, Shari doesn't find a pile of catlogs to be very "decorative". Besides, no self-respecting woodworker would be caught dead using an TV tray as an end table. So, I decided to build a small cabinet-style end table to hide them in. My father calls this piece a "smoking stand", but to me, its more like a miniture kitchen cabinet. Traditionally, a smoking stand would have a place on the top for an ash tray and the drawer and cabinet would be used for storing, cigars, pipes, and tobacco. Of course, I don't smoke, so the drawer and cabinet will hold remote controls, letter openers, and catalogs. And, for good measure, the top has two recessed circles to hold thirsty stone coasters (a good place to set your beer while thumbing through a new catalog). The case of the cabinet and shelves are made of 3/4" oak plywood with a solid oak face frame (just like a kitchen cabinet). The top, door frames, and drawer face are solid oak. The overall dimensions are 20"w x 20"d x 24"t. The entire piece is finished with Minwax Red Mahogany stain and a polyurathane topcoat.
