Woodworking Project - Shop Wood Rack
Back to the Rolling "M" Workshop Projects Page
I stole the idea for this wood rack from a picture I saw in ShopNotes magazine (see the first picture below). I didn't get a chance to read the article, so I made up my own measurements based on the picture. I also made a couple of changes to the design. Here's what I came up with... The rack has storage for sheet stock, long 8' lengths, and short cut offs. The base of the rack is 3/4" CDX on a 2x4 frame. The base measures 8' x 3'. The "A" frame is 5/8" CDX with 3/4" CDX shelves. The bins for short cut offs are constructed of 3/4" CDX with 1x2 cleats. The whole rack rides on a set of four 3" casters, two smart (swiveling) and two stupid (rigid). The original ShopNotes design has 5 bins and 4 shelves. My rack uses 4 wider bins and 3 shelves (the bottom shelf is double-height). The total cost is hard to figure because the majority of the wood is left over from other projects, but I would guess the cost somewhere around $60. My wood rack isn't as neat and tidy as the ShopNotes picture, but at least all of my lumber is one place instead of being scattered all over the shop.
