How the shop looks now:
The interrior layout of the Rolling "M" Workshop was loosely based on the floor plan for Norm Abram's New Yankee Workshop. Of course, Norm has more space and more toys, but you get the idea. The point is ,like Norm, I started planning my the shop with the Table saw and a woodworking bench at the heart of the shop and other stationary tools positioned around the walls of the shop. With the Table Saw and woodworking bench in place, I moved the heavy tool bench from the old garage workshop to the back (west) wall of the new workshop. I also moved the large wall hanging tool cabinet from the garage to the north wall of the new workshop. This cabinet has since been replaced by a more traditional shallow hand tool cabinet on the West wall of the shop. The drill press moved to its new home in the southwest corner of workshop atop an old kitchen cabinet. Along the south wall, I built a miter bench w/power tool storage similar to the one that Norm built on his show. This bench also acts as an extension table for the radial-arm saw. I've added a 4' strip of plywood around all of the walls to allow easy mounting and hanging of tools and storage. Along the top edge of the plywood strip, I've added storage shelving.
Future plans:
- Replace the old heavy tool bench with a more "built-in" tool storage bench built with the same construction methods I used on the Miter Bench.
- Replace the old Drill Press cabinet (recycled kitchen cabinet) with a sturdier shop cabinet with storage drawers for my drill bits and accessories.
- Drywall and insulate the rest of the shop walls and ceiling.
- Build a Saw Cabinet to sit under the right-hand table saw wing to store blades, jigs, and other table saw accessories.
- Add a stationary outfeed table to the table saw.
- Build a slant-top desk to house my plans, paperwork, and books. The desk will sit in the northeast corner of the workshop.
